I'm not sure about CUSA but New England and DC are in shambles mentally and that is affecting the results that we see in CCL. They both obvoiously want nothing to do with this competition. And as you say excuses abound. The reality isn't a lack of quality in MLS since DC used a completely C team and still lost on a completely fluke goal. the reality is they are not in it mentally and have been burned. I think he losses in the last CCC with balls going through perkins hands have screwed with their psyche. It seems that there are new teams coming up that have the mentality to win (Crew would be one). But i find it funny how at the beginning of this year Garber berates DC for not trying harder in CCC but then for CCL defends them and brings out excuses of MLS cup is more important. The league realizes the black eye and i'm hopefull will do something next year to remedy it.

DC has lots its edge plain and simple and right now is busy spinning so they don't look like the total failures that they are.

DC had obviously already given up on CCL. Both MSL and FMF teams were mostly reserve sides. It tells you what the coaches/front offices of those teams think about this tournament.

I think that people need to stop looking at teams like DC United and start looking at how close every single team in MLS is at this moment. Seriously, look at the standings.
The problem is that the Superdraft isn't providing the NUMBER of talented players. (One of the big reasons that DC is failing is because our bench has all the quality of a half masticated burrito). Thing is, that's also the problem with the rest of the teams. MLS has become so spread and even that good teams have Very dry spells, horrible teams acquire one good player and suddenly seem "on fire," and in the end EVERY TEAM IS IN THE HUNT FOR THE PLAYOFFS!
I think the thing that needs to change immediately is the salary cap. Double it. Do it now. Then teams like DC can actually Pay for quality proffessionals from other leagues, (instead of Peralta, straight out of the illustrious Mexican second division.
Now I won't say that DC is blameless; they're not doing a good job. But in this league, it's becoming nearly impossible to do right. I think this shows that the entire league needs revamping. Then, and only then, will United have the ability to put together a truly internationally viable team, with both Well paid proffessionals and players that decided Not to go overseas. But money talks, and equality is no way to run a league

As a DC United fan, I just think it was a shame that the front office decided to blow up a two time SS team. They were a good team that needed to be put over the top, not a weak team that was overachieving. Sadly, it will take a little while for the club to get back to where it was before the team was blown up.
As for DC United's play in the SuperLiga and now the CCL, I think they're frustrated and demoralized more than anything. Fixture congestion is a contributing factor but not an excuse. All the injuries and inconsistency of performances are taking a mental toll late in the season.
