Superliga Matchday Three: DC United- Atlante

Started by The Gaffer · 10 months ago

To call DC’s performance tonight a disappointment is major understatement. From my personal perspective as I discussed on the 2Gs show with Graham and Peter on April 10th I have a certain expectation from DC in these sorts of competitions and no expectations from other teams in MLS. • DC has gone from the league's elite team to a club that continuously embarrass MLS in these types of championships.

You constantly say DC is the signature club of the league but all those accomplishments are now 8-12 years old. They won two international trophies the only two I believe MLS has ever won but again that was ages ago.

Do you simply assume the uniforms will win games? You seem to constantly imply that. That's your problem. You are sooooooo biased towards DC United.
  • The expectation in Washington and the surrounding area was that with all the player moves and then giving Emilio the DP that United would win either the Champions Cup or Superliga.

These sorts of performances are not acceptable.

This wonderful line of yours sums it up:

Prior to Saturday DC United had never once lost at RFK Stadium to a team from the Mexican League. Now in three days they have lost twice.

Need a greater case be made that Soehn is over his head and the offseason was essentially wasted?
  • Steve Goff reports on Tom Soehn’s comments:

“There is no sugarcoating anything,” Coach Tom Soehn said. “The performance, especially in the first half, was atrocious. There was no commitment, no passion. We came out flat all over, and that’s unacceptable. . . .

“Today we accomplished all the things we did when we were 2-7 [in the regular season]. That’s the team we looked like today, and that’s not good enough.”

As I have said before whether or not certain fans view this competition as a glorified exhibition and would rather be playing regular MLS games does not matter.

DC United takes every international especially when a trophy and substantial prestige in Latin America is on the line seriously. These last two performances have been an all time low for the team. Injuries hurt but some of us who have watched this league since the beginning expect more from United and more importantly United expects more from United. I’m sure Soehn feels the heat and his comments were on the money.
